ICYMI: 6 take Blak to the future

We recently announced some new arrivals to our little gang at Blak Labs. Here’s the official release. VAL20012.jpgFrom left to right: Ben Amdur, Pui Hun, Praveen, Ben Lim, Jun Hong, Dawn.

Joining the agency are Benjamin Lim (art), Dawn Koh (art), Teh Pui Hun (art), Tan Jun Hong (copy), Praveen Amarasuriya (copy) and Benjamin Amdur (copy).

Lim, a recent NAFA graduate, converted his internship with Blak Labs into a full time gig following great work on SIT and other blue chip clients.

Dawn Koh was most recently with Havas Creative working as art director on Fairprice, Tokio Marine Insurance Group and CIMB Bank Singapore. She was also part of the team that clinched a D&AD Wood Pencil for their work on the Havas Gazette.

Pui Hun recently arrived from Malaysia’s Leo Burnett and ARC where she worked on Kronenbourg 1664 and Sunway Pyramid.

Jun Hong joins from Formul8, where he worked as a copywriter on MINDEF, CapitaLand, Temasek Holdings and Singapore Sports Hub. Prior to that, Jun Hong began his career at IPG Mediabrands, handling accounts such as Johnson and Johnson, HBO and Sports Singapore.

Praveen’s writing experience at Mandate Communications includes stints on JTC, RHB, Thai Airways, SingHealth, JurongHealth and MINDEF among others. Having started his advertising career in account management, he brings a well-rounded perspective to his work.

Benjamin Amdur arrives from Sydney and gigs at Zoo and FCB KL. Says Amdur,
“I grew up in Hong Kong and worked in Malaysia, so I have always had a soft spot for Asia. The chance to work in a world-class city in a world-class agency was a great opportunity.”

Said Charlie Blower, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Blak Labs, “Blak Labs has just celebrated our 6th birthday which is why we’re delighted to announce the arrival of these 6 young stars.”

“It’s a pleasure to be able to reward their talent and promise with an opportunity. Attracting good talent is particularly tough, especially in a market where there is so much good competition. We’re lucky they’ve chosen us and look forward to their contributions.”

Can anyone do what we do?

Every week at Blak Labs, we help our clients’ achieve their objectives.

giphy.gifWhether that’s promoting a new credit card in a young market like Myanmar or driving visitorship to the latest floral attraction at Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay or even launching a property in London,  the demands are the same.

To do this well requires a degree of creativity that is hard to replicate.

And as the esteemed Damon Stapleton so rightly says doing this well, day in, day out, requires desire and discipline. Otherwise the result is just bullshit.

Have a read and see what else he has to say. I have to say I agree with him.

Another historic campaign from Blak Labs?

Blak Labs new campaign for National Museum of Singapore rewrites history for today’s social audiences

It gives me great pleasure to share Blak Labs’ most recent campaign for “Treasures of the World from the British Museum”. It’s the latest blockbuster exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore and if you’re in the city and you have some time, you really should go and see it.

A knight at the museum
A knight at the museum. One of the Lewis Chessmen from the British Museum’s Treasures of the World exhibit.

It’s only taken a couple of million years to pull together. With an extensive collection of over 200 stunning artifacts from around the world, we thought we’d have some fun with it.

Thankfully, our client at the National Museum prides itself on keeping history relevant. They like to present things in a way that connects with audiences today.

Judging by the fact that the show has been extended by a couple of months, it’s good to see that the content is clearly connecting. The campaign runs across key outdoor sites in town, together with strategic social media initiatives. Blak Labs won the project via government tender last year.

So is the ancient art of copywriting alive and well at Blak Labs?

We like to think so. Because it sure as hell isn’t in our blog posts!

If you’d like to see other executions in the campaign, leave us a comment below. Hey, leave us a comment even if you don’t!

Always happy to get a response. Thanks for reading.

Blak Labs takes Liberty

Liberty-Logo-Web-1600pxLiberty Insurance Pte Ltd has awarded the launch of its brand campaign to independent creative agency, Blak Labs, after an intensive three-way pitch.

“As a top ten general insurer in Singapore, we have been steadily growing our presence in the market,” says Teo Ser Foong, Vice-President, Marketing & Analytics at Liberty Insurance. “With this new campaign, we want to bring Singaporeans closer to our brand, as well as our range of innovative products.”

“In the United States, Liberty is a big name in insurance. Here in Singapore, they’re a challenger brand. Being an independent, we face similar business challenges,” adds Charlie Blower, Managing Partner and Co-Founder of Blak Labs. “We are delighted that they see the benefit of working with like-minded people.”

The new campaign for Liberty Insurance breaks across print, digital, radio and prime outdoor sites in the coming weeks.

Congrats and thanks to everyone at Blak Labs for making it happen!

Starting 2015 on a strong note, our little shop beefs up its creative-focused model with three new hires. Here’s an extract from the press release:

“Joining Blak Labs are Steve Koswara (Designer), Fin Guo (Art Director) and Alicia Tan (Copy).

Steven recently graduated from NAFA and his design excellence is already making an impact for clients such as Gardens by the Bay.

Fin joins from a local independent agency and has already delivered on several key accounts.

Alicia, an Ogilvy Fellow, joins us from Geometry Global. A self-published author whose work has been showcased in Japan, Alicia has quickly demonstrated her capabilities on new business pitches and existing clients.

“Finding new talent is never easy. So it is a pleasure to welcome Steven, Fin and Alicia. We’ve been through a long process of candidate screening, using our proprietary Blak Labs interview technique and each fits with our desire to provide clients with an exceptional degree of Creative Care,” said Charlie Blower, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Blak Labs.”

And guess what? Living in this world that operates at the speed of e, one publication picked this up and published it less than an hour after we sent out the news. Congrats to @cbasia for being first with the news. And thank you!

Blak Labs goes green for Fuji Xerox Papers

Our latest campaign for Fuji Xerox Singapore. Driving the message home to consumers around the CBD are digital, posters and a fleet of newly designed trucks that highlight Fuji Xerox green credentials. Each truck features a QR code which when snapped by passers-by, takes them to a site  (www.tree.sg) where they can register for a free “Go green” seminar on energy conservation sustainability and improving efficiency in the office.

The visual features a eucalyptus tree, which was hand-cut by partner Nick Tan over 3 days.

The insight for the idea comes from the fact that Fuji Xerox replants 3 trees for every ton of paper harvested. The campaign launched on World Environment Day

You Print. We Plant.

“Consumers don’t think twice about the type of paper they use everyday. So we wanted to remind them to choose papers that exercise environmental responsibility. It’s one small act that can make a big difference down the line.”

Blak Labs first TVC is now on air

This spot for Maybank Singapore’s Family & Friends rebate card is the first work from our new integrated micro-agency Blak Labs. The spot was shot in Perth by Moviola’s Tai Heng, posted at Black Magic Design in Singapore. Music was produced by Song Zu with Gerald Fitzgerald directing the performance in Sydney. Great work by Hwee Peng Koh, Nick Tan and Elsa Peck at Blak Labs.
